Volunteer

Thank you very much for your interest in volunteer position at Human Rights Now. Please see the following descriptions for the specific tasks and responsibilities for each volunteer position, although volunteer activities are not limited to the following. We will contact you as soon as possible upon receiving your applications. Volunteer positions at HRN do not require full-time commitment as the work load varies on a case by case basis. Please note that HRN is unavailable to pay for transportation costs. For those with Japanese ability, please also refer to open volunteer positions on our Japanese page.

Examples of Volunteer Positions

Event Volunteer – Tokyo

Currently HRN is not taking event volunteers for the foreseeable future due to our lack of events at physical venues. We will update this text when we are taking volunteers again. Below is the information about event volunteers in normal times for reference.

HRN holds an average of 2-4 events every month on a variety of human rights topics. While the majority of our events are in Japanese, anyone can assist with events regardless of Japanese level. Tasks include assembling tables and chairs, taking videos and photos, manning reception, guiding attendees and speakers, and passing out materials. We also welcome volunteers with high level Japanese ability to come to our office to help advertise for events. HRN will waive the attendance fee for all volunteers at the event.

Translator / Editor / Grammar Checker – Tokyo / Remote

HRN recruits translators, editors, and grammar checkers for our statements and reports on an as-needed basis for the following positions:

Translator / Editor (English – Japanese / Japanese – English)
Grammar Checker (English)

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English (a minimum score of 90 on the TOEFL iBT exam)
  • Basic understanding of international human rights law
  • Experience in English – Japanese and/or Japanese – English translation

Note: For the grammar checker position, applicants must originate in an English-speaking country.

HRN gives preference to volunteers in Tokyo, but remote opportunities are also available.

Information Technology Volunteer – Tokyo

HRN is recruiting volunteers who can help us with the development of our website. A high level of computer competency and familiarity working with the internet is strongly desired. Experience of homepage design is preferred.

Graphic Designer – Tokyo

HRN is recruiting graphic designers for our quarterly magazines, annual reports, event fliers, and other promotional materials. As the majority of projects will be in Japanese, Japanese language ability is preferred but not absolutely necessary. For larger projects with experienced designers, paid opportunities are possible.

Requirements:

  • An academic degree /experience in graphic design
  • Japanese language (N3 equivalent or above)

Videographer – Tokyo & New York

Our Tokyo headquarters and New York office are seeking volunteers who can help us with the production and editing of storytelling / short documentary videos to introduce our projects, promote awareness of human rights issues, find donors and raise funds to better assist victims of human rights violations.

Requirements:

  • An academic degree /experience in video production
  • A basic understanding of human rights issues or a strong desire to learn
