Oral Statement on Myanmar<\/strong><\/h2>\nHuman Rights Now condemns the Myanmar military\u2019s continuing rights violations and strikes against civilians.<\/p>\n
More than 14,780 political prisoners remain detained and face horrific conditions including systemic torture, sexual violence, and denied medical care. More than 200 of them were arrested under the election protection law for peaceful criticism of the election, violating freedom of expression.<\/p>\n
The military also continues to attack civilians, including homes, schools, medical facilities, religious buildings, and IDP camps. Between August 2025 and January 2026, at least 702 civilians were killed, including 224 women and 153 children. In total, more than 8,300 civilians have been killed since the 2021 coup.<\/p>\n
The military\u2019s obstructions of aid have also caused a humanitarian crisis, with over 3.6 million people internally displaced and more than 15 million facing acute food insecurity, even as major donor countries have greatly reduced aid.<\/p>\n
And despite the military\u2019s continuing non-compliance with the Five-Point Consensus and Security Council Resolution 2669, neighboring states and ASEAN are legitimizing its illegitimate rule.<\/p>\n
We call on the military to restore true democratic rule to Myanmar, end all military actions and restrictions on aid, release all political prisoners, and repeal abusive laws.<\/p>\n
