First seminar of Myanmar domestic human rights education project in fiscal 2016.<\/h4>\n

Since February 2014, Human Rights Now (HRN) has conducted human rights education activities in Myanmar to empower community leaders who will likely face human rights and democracy issues in the future as lawyers, citizen groups, etc. This year the activities took place in August 2016. HRN sent two lawyers, Mr. Shogo Watanabe and Mr. Koji Nakashima, to Myanmar as teachers and held seminars at the local offices of our partners of this project, the <\/em>88 Generation \u2013 Peace and Open Society<\/em> and the Yangon Bar Association.<\/p>\n

\"88%e6%b8%a1%e8%be%ba%e5%85%88%e7%94%9f%e5%8f%97%e8%ac%9b%e8%80%85%e8%b3%aa%e5%95%8f%ef%bc%88%e3%82%a6%e3%82%a7%e3%83%96%ef%bc%89\"<\/a>Mr. Watanabe emphasized on importance of lawyers\u2019 activities regarding public interest issues in his lecture on the concept of the rule of law and the role of lawyers\u2019 autonomy. In addition, he mentioned HIV litigation in Japan and forced deportations of Myanmar nationals and explained in detail how to deal with public problems by using the concept of international norms and constitutional human rights. Through his passionate, considerate explanations regarding the role of lawyers\u2019 autonomy, participants recognized the importance of lawyers\u2019 autonomy and expressed an ambition that they would work towards changing the current situation in Myanmar for the better. It was great to see!<\/p>\n

\"yba%e5%8f%97%e8%ac%9b%e8%80%85%e8%b3%aa%e5%95%8f%ef%bc%88%e3%82%a6%e3%82%a7%e3%83%96%ef%bc%89\"In Mr. Nakashima\u2019s lecture, he spoke about Japanese lawyers\u2019 activities regarding environmental litigation (such as the Minamata disease tragedy) and gave practical examples of how lawyers might learn from these examples and use them in Myanmar. After giving an overview of historical Japanese environmental litigation, Mr. Nakashima discussed current insufficiency of Myanmar\u2019s laws. He highlighted that although Japan and other developed countries had higher environmental standards, brought about in part by environmental litigation, countries such as Myanmar are currently operating with far lower environment standards. Mr. Nakashima, on the basis of his experience in Japan and China, actively exchanged opinions with the participants regarding possible future actions.<\/p>\n
