Myanmar Fact Finding Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n

Human Rights Now (HRN) has released a report from a HRN fact-finding mission carried out on the borders of Myanmar and Thailand on 11th April 2008.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Human Rights Now dispatched a fact-finding mission to Mae Sot, a town on the border area between the Myanmar and Thailand, to investigate human rights violations during and after the Saffron Revolution in September 2007. The Saffron Revolution saw a surge of monk led democracy activity oppressed by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), the offcial name for the Myanmar military regime.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The fact-finding mission team conducted interviews with more than a dozen monk and citizens who joined the movement. These individuals were forced to flee Myanmar due to the danger of arrest by security services operating under the military regime as a result of suspicions over their participation in the revolution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The HRN mission also approached members of the pro democracy movement and analysed and discussed the content of the newly published 2008 constitution of the SPDC along with prevailing conditions related to a general election based upon the constitution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
