HRN Event at UNHRC<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Human Rights Now (HRN) recently hosted a successful side event at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.<\/p>\n

Attendees at the event, entitled “In Order to Protect the Right to Health of Citizens After Nuclear Disasters”\u00a0included representatives from governments and various NGO’s.<\/p>\n

Following the earlier presentation of a report by the Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health after his visit to Japan, the ex-mayor of Futaba Mr. Idogawa Katsutaka, the man responsible for evacuating Fukishima Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture Mr.\u00a0Morinaga Atsuko,\u00a0and the founder of Citizens’ Radiation Measurement Stations (CRMS) Mr.\u00a0Iwata Wataru, all spoke to an attentive audience about the state of affairs in Fukushima after the nuclear accident.<\/p>\n

To the surprise of many participants, it emerged that many attendees from outside of Japan did not fully understand the grave impact that the Fukushima nuclear disaster had on residents living in the area.<\/p>\n

Kazuko Ito,\u00a0Secretary General of\u00a0Human Rights Now called for international support, stating that “In order for the Japanese government to take outside counsel seriously, the disaster must be a matter of international concern.”<\/p>\n
