{"id":155,"date":"2012-08-30T14:50:54","date_gmt":"2012-08-30T05:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test.hrn.or.jp\/?p=155"},"modified":"2023-10-25T09:41:55","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T00:41:55","slug":"cambodia-land-seminar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrn.or.jp\/eng\/news\/2012\/08\/30\/cambodia-land-seminar\/","title":{"rendered":"Cambodia seminar series 2012:  Presenting the report of a fact finding mission to Cambodia &#8216;In Cambodia, People are Deprived of Land&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Cambodia Seminar Series 2012<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span>Report of HRN Fact Finding Mission to Cambodia: &#8216;In Cambodia, People are Deprived of Land&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Recently, Cambodia has seen an alarming increase in the number of people evicted from the land where they live and people are losing their homes in the name of &#8221;development&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The number of such cases is increasing year by year, with people forcefully evicted from agricultural land they are living on and depend upon for their livelihoods.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span>As frustration among those affected leads to countrywide protests against the evictions, the government has moved to suppress the protests by force. The Illegal arrest and detention of human rights defenders, brutal use of force against villagers, and even the killing of citizens are being reported as Cambodian people fight land disputes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span>Human Rights Now (HRN), an international human rights NGO based in Tokyo, became concerned about the increasing number of these human rights violations in the country and sent a fact-finding mission to investigate.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span>This seminar session will see HRN report on these evictions and discuss the findings of their fact finding mission.
