{"id":150,"date":"2012-08-16T10:12:37","date_gmt":"2012-08-16T01:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test.hrn.or.jp\/?p=150"},"modified":"2023-10-25T09:44:28","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T00:44:28","slug":"temporary-housing-earthquake-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrn.or.jp\/eng\/news\/2012\/08\/16\/temporary-housing-earthquake-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Rights Now Visits Temporary Housing Area for Earthquake Victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kazuko Ito, Secretary General of Human Rights Now, visited Great East Japan Earthquake\u00a0victims living in temporary housing areas, along with Kazuko Koori (Ministry of Internal\u00a0Affairs officer), Tomiko Okada (Democratic Party of Japan Vice President), and Azuma Konno\u00a0(Democratic Party of Japan) on June 16th, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The three representatives, expressed deep concern about the rights of the earthquake and tsunami\u00a0victims after the release of research by Human Rights Now earlier this year. They observed the temporary\u00a0housing facilities in critical areas including those located in Kesennuma in Miyagi prefecture. The\u00a0group visited housing constructed on unstable ground, and talked with victims who\u00a0are impelled to live in poor living conditions &#8211; often in a house with no insulation- receiving no\u00a0assistance from the local and national government, in order to extend their understanding of the\u00a0current challenges disaster-affected areas are facing in the aftermath of the events in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I heard a rumor that the city government is not going to provide us with financial assistance. We&#8217;re\u00a0running out of money. How are we supposed to support ourselves?&#8221; Said one victim showing\u00a0frustration with the lack of information and clear vision reagrding uncertainties about their future.<\/p>\n<p>This visit revealed that the assistance scheme adapted by the national government is not being \u00a0strictly followed\u00a0by local governmental bodies, threatening the victims&#8217; basic human rights which are granted by the\u00a0Constitution under Article 25.
