Working with the United Nations Human Rights Programme: A Handbook for Civil Society<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Human Rights Now (HRN) has published an official Japanese translation of\u00a0the United Nation’s ‘Handbook for Civil Society’,<\/i>\u00a0The English edition of the\u00a0Handbook<\/i>\u00a0was originally published in 2008.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Handbook\u00a0<\/i>explains how the different United Nations human rights mandates and mechanisms work, and how members of civil society, such as human rights defenders, non governmental organizations and academic institutions, can engage with them most effectively.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Handbook<\/i>\u00a0includes sections on the Human Rights Council, the human rights treaty bodies, the special procedures, the universal periodic review mechanism and the various complaint procedures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Each chapter, accessible as a stand-alone reference on specific mechanisms or mandates, provides entry points for members of civil society and best practice examples of their initiatives and contributions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Handbook<\/i>\u00a0also promotes collaboration between civil society and the Office of the High\u00a0Commissioner\u00a0for Human Rights (OHCHR). It introduces the role\u00a0and activities of the OHCHR, publications and resource materials, fellowship and training programmes, and funds and grants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
