HRN releases report “In Cambodia, People are Deprived of Land.”

Cambodia Land Rights Report

Land rights issues continue to be an ongoing problem in Cambodia.  Today Human Rights Now (HRN) releases its report on Cambodian land rights issues, after a fact finding visit conducted in June 2012.

Authorities in Cambodia are moving to prevent protesting residents having their voices heard as they struggle to battle against forced evictions. Frustration is growing among affected residents, and attempts to stand up to the government are being met with illegal arrests, imprisonment and even extra judicial killings.

The country has seen an increasing number of people become victims to this issue, deprived of their land, rights to land and watch as their housing  is taken away in the name of development. The team had a chance to speak to the family of a 14 year old girl killed during a land conflict, people arrested and tortured for their parts in land conflict issues and other affected residents.

As the situation worsens, HRN investigates the current situation surrounding land disputes and related human rights violations in Cambodia.
